General Description: IBX-4041 is used to measure neuraminidases (also termed sialidases) in patient specimens and research samples. Neuraminidases are enzymes that release N-acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid) from biomolecules.
Application: Elevated level of neuraminidases is closely associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV). The testing kits containing IBX-4041 as the active ingredient are sensitive and reliable tools to determine the neuraminidase level. Therefore these kits are widely utilized for clinical research and diagnosis of BV.
IBX-4041 can also be applied to measure neuraminidases in other research samples. High level of neuraminidases is implicated in certain types of cancer and therefore these enzymes are also considered useful biomarkers to monitor cancer progression.
Mechanism: IBX-4041 is a chromogenic substrate of neuraminidases. In the absence of neuraminidases, the solution of IBX-4041 is colorless in neutral and turns yellow when adjusted to basic (pH ≥11). In the presence of neuraminidases, IBX-4041 is readily hydrolyzed in slightly acidic conditions. The hydrolysis product displays blue color after the reaction solution is basified (pH ≥11). Therefore the neuraminidase level of a specific sample can be easily measured by incubation with IBX-4041 followed by adding a strong base to the solution. The blue, green or yellow color of the resulting solution respectively indicates high, medium or low level of neuraminidases in the sample being examined. Quantitation of the neuraminidase concentration can be made by applying the procedure in combination of a colorimeter.
